Memorable Naming CeremonyCreating a Memorable Naming Ceremony

  1. What is your child’s full name and date of birth? What is special about their name that you would like to share?

  2. How would you describe being a parent and being a family?

  3. How would you describe your child? What are you enjoying about being his/her parent? What are your hopes and dreams for your child as they grow older? Do you wish to make a gift of words to your child or make a special presentation of a gift recognising the naming ceremony?

  4. Are you having guide parents or mentors for your child? If yes, what might you like to say about this role or these people? Will they be presenting a symbolic gift or a gift of words as part of the ceremony?

  5. Are there other family members that we need to acknowledge, e.g. other children, grandparents, and significant other people?

  6. What style of ceremony would you like? Is there a party theme or some other emphasis that you would like? In part this will be determined by where and when you are having the ceremony. Another consideration is the age of the child. Sometimes a naming is held to mark a special birthday, e.g. 1st birthday.

  7. What has prompted or encouraged you to have a naming ceremony?

  8. Are there any special songs or readings that you would like to include? I can help you find these if you have some idea of what you would like them to say.

  9. Please add anything else that I need to know with regards your naming ceremony. Also feel free to ask me as many questions as you need to. There are no rules for a naming ceremony so we can create one that works for you.

  10. Ideas for gifts or special activities include:
    • Planting the placenta under a tree
    • Use of candles
    • Blessings using water etc.
    • A time capsule to seal small gifts or blessings
    • A blessing journal
